What a visit involves
A first appointment is about half an hour: what brought you in, what you have already tried, an examination, and then what we think is going on and whether we can help.
If we do not think chiropractic is the right answer for you, we will say so and point you somewhere better. Follow-up visits are shorter.
Techniques
Nine of them, and which one gets used depends on you — your build, your age, what is wrong, and what you are comfortable with. A frail eighty-year-old and a rugby player do not get the same treatment.
Gonstead
A full-spine analysis before anything is adjusted, using palpation, motion testing and posture, so the adjustment is specific to one segment rather than general.
Diversified
The most widely taught manual adjustment, and the one most people picture — a short, quick thrust by hand.
Thompson drop-table
A table with sections that drop a short distance as the adjustment is made. The drop does part of the work, so less force is needed by hand.
Activator
A hand-held spring-loaded instrument delivering a small, precise impulse. Low force, and often the choice for people who do not want to be manually adjusted.
Sacro-occipital technique
SOT. Works with the relationship between the pelvis and the base of the skull, using padded blocks under the pelvis and the body's own weight rather than a thrust.
Applied kinesiology
Manual muscle testing used alongside the physical examination as one input among several, not as a diagnosis on its own.
K-tape
Elastic tape applied to the skin to support an area between appointments. It goes on at the end of a visit and stays on for a few days.
Webster technique
A specific pelvic and sacral analysis and adjustment used during pregnancy, with the patient positioned to be comfortable as pregnancy progresses.
Tongue-tie and intraoral
Assessment and gentle work inside the mouth and jaw. Most often used for infants, and done alongside whoever else is involved in their care.
Injuries and ACC
If you have hurt yourself, no GP referral is needed. We examine you first, and if it is an injury ACC covers we lodge the claim at that first visit.
